Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian is at present writing a novel about the ancient barrows of England. It's a record of the treasures that she discovers in. A mysterious letter invites her to the tiny village of Bewlay, tucked away in the remote countryside she embarks on train, with her companion to spend the day in Bewlay.
The mysterious figure who called her to help is absent upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. The landowner is obnoxious and denies entry to her barrow. People in the area fear her and she travels on her own. wears trousers.
